Genius Mikey Dread succumbs to battle with a brain tumor! See more information on Surforeggae!

Mikey Dread, one of the Jamaican artists who most influenced the island's music, has experienced drama in recent years. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, Dread underwent several treatments, and, according to very close sources, even knowing the severity of his problem, he remained the same fighter as always, saying that he would only leave the earth when he was ready to do so. Mikey became a myth in the 70s, where at the head of Radio JBC (Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation) he founded the program "Dread At The Controls", in addition to influencing rock artists such as the Punk Group The Clash and also releasing several Reggae classics. Albums such as "World War III", "Dread At The Controls" and "Happy Family" were acclaimed by audiences and critics around the world. His proximity to the Punk Movement, achieved through his friendship with the British Group The Clash, meant that his music reached new audiences, which was very important for Reggae. In recent years he survived in Miami, in the USA, re-releasing several albums on his label "Dread At The Controls". This piece of news, which was meant to communicate the seriousness of his health condition and send positive energy to the master, had to be changed even before it was aired, as shortly after it was finished being written the artist passed away. Mikey Dread left us last Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 4 pm. The body is gone but its legacy and message will remain forever.
