Reggae producer singer Sugar Minott, aged 54, died last Saturday (10), at the University Hospital of the West Indies, in Kingston, the Jamaican capital. According to the news website "Yahoo! News", the announcement was made by the musician's wife, Maxine Stowe, who did not reveal the cause of death. Two months ago, Minott had canceled performances in Canada because of chest pains.
Born in Kingston, Lincoln Barrington Minott began his career in the late 60s, still in his teens, as a member of the reggae trio African Brothers. In the 70s, he launched himself as a solo artist, and recorded songs such as "Vanity" and "Mr. DC". In 1981, he had his first success with "Good thing going", a cover by the group Jackson Five, which reached fourth place in the UK hit parade that year.
Minott was also known for investing in young talents, such as Junior Reid and Tenor Saw, on his label Black Roots, from the company Youthman Promotion. More recently, he participated in some of the works of the Easy Star All-Stars project, the albums "Radiodread" (dub version for the album "OK computer", by the band Radiohead) and "Easy Star’s Lonely Heart’s Dub Band" (which pays homage to the Beatles' masterpiece also with dub and reggae versions).
"New day", Minott's new album, is scheduled for release in the coming weeks.
