Jamaica celebrates Marcus Garvey Day for the first time, in honor of the 125th anniversary of the birth of the country's national hero, a pioneer in defending the rights of black men. During the celebrations, the government will hand over the keys to the city to Julius Garvey, son of the independence fighter, for his father's contribution to the formation of Jamaican nationality.
In the announcement, Kingston councilor Ian Telfer assured that "carrying out tributes and recognizing Marcus Garvey's works is a historic duty for his country."
Garvey, who was born on August 17, 1887 in Saint Ann Bay, is considered the leading Pan-Africanist of the 20th century and was the founder of Asociação Universal to Homem Negro's Benstar. At the beginning of the month, the prime minister, Portia Simpson-Miller, highlighted the importance of the tribute to Garvey in 2012, when 50 years of Reino Unido's independence are also celebrated.
"Garvey raised the Jamaican man's fight against discrimination to its highest expression and his example continues to inspire us," he said.
