The Senate of Uruguai is expected to approve an unprecedented law in the world today. The measure provides for state regulation of the production, distribution and consumption of marijuana in the country. Basically, the government will not sell it pressed, nor will it allow advertising exploitation of the product.
Under discussion since last year, the law was proposed by government representatives. It had been approved by a majority in the Chamber of Deputies in July 2013. After today's vote in the Senate, it will go to the president for sanction José Mujica. The new policy is expected to be implemented before the end of this year. Uruguai will become the first country in the world to break more than a century of repression against weed consumption.

The Uruguayan law is innovative in several aspects, but some of the premises are already known and somewhat obvious to anyone who looks into the issue: marijuana is the most consumed illegal drug on the planet. It is the choice of 80% of the approximately 200 million users of illicit substances.
The proven medicinal benefits combined with the scientific consensus that it causes less harm to health; Even less than alcohol and tobacco, they created political conditions for the Uruguayan proposal to become effective.
(Less harm than alcohol or tobacco)
With avant-garde policies, since the 1970s, Uruguai does not criminalize or arrest drug users. This is not a populist measure. Opinion polls show that the regulatory project is rejected by 63% of the population.
Mujica wants to reduce the power of drug trafficking and 'supported' the opinion of Uruguayans to avoid future concerns about crime. Uruguai is not a violent country, but rates have increased year by year.
