Jamaica quer tornar reggae seu patrimônio cultural perante Unesco! Check it out!

The Ministry of Culture of Jamaica has begun the process of nominating reggae for UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), where it may be recognized as a Jamaican asset, the Caribbean island's government announced on Tuesday via its Twitter account.

Janice Lindsay, director of the Ministry's Division of Cultural and Creative Industries, explained that the plan is to appoint a committee that will prepare the proposal with the aim of submitting it in March 2017.

We must protect the distinctive history of reggae as an intangible heritage, and we must do so before someone else presents elements of this proposal as their own" - Lindsay said in a statement.

The official stressed the importance this designation would have for future generations, since they are the ones who "will not forgive us if they have to read or listen to excerpts from musical works of our country because the rest was lost over time".

Furthermore, she assured that inscription as intangible cultural heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will be seen as evidence of the "origin and distinction of what it means to be Jamaican".
