Doctors, researchers and patients who advocate the medicinal use of Cannabis participated in the "Fórum de Cannabis Medicinal", held at the São Paulo City Council on Monday (12/11). The goal is to discuss the right to health through the legal use of the substance.
In Brazil, medicinal marijuana use is restricted to a single Cannabis-based medicine, which is imported and was approved by the Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária, and to a few families who obtained preventive habeas corpus to grow and use the herb medicinally without the risk of imprisonment.

To expand the use of medicinal marijuana, doctors, researchers, patients and organized civil society discuss the need for regulation. Designer Gilberto de Castro, who has suffered from multiple sclerosis for 20 years, says he has improved greatly with the use of the substance.
"Because of the pain from multiple sclerosis I use Cannabis to relieve it and it has also proven effective in controlling the progression of the disease. In 2014 I was bedridden and only moved in a wheelchair (…) I stopped all pharmacy medications and I'm only using Cannabis and normal chemotherapy to contain the progression of multiple sclerosis. Today I'm walking".
At the Forum, researchers showed that marijuana has always been used medicinally throughout history, but that in the last century it became marginalized. Research proving the benefits of the herb in controlling symptoms of diseases was also presented.
Physician Paula Dall'Stella, with a postgraduate degree in neuro-oncology, advocates its use.
"Cannabis is a plant with more than 500 chemical compounds, including 120 cannabinoids, which have a synergistic interaction among themselves".
Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Eliane Guerra Nunes states that there are many studies on the subject.
"In the field of psychiatry there are several works and articles, including Brazilian ones, that say it is good for depression, as an antipsychotic, neuroprotective and antioxidant".
Councilwoman Soninha Francine (PPS), who brought the debate to the Chamber, highlighted the role of the Legislature in fostering discussion.
"I think Parliament is the place where we must have space to debate all subjects, not necessarily those linked to the municipal sphere. We must guarantee the right, the possibility of producing in Brazil, of processing, conducting other studies and research. To aim, including, for it to go through Conitec, which is the Ministry of Health Commission that evaluates and authorizes the entry of new medicines and new technologies".
