Delroy Washington, a Jamaican who was fundamental to reggae in England, left us this week at 68 years of age. Delroy moved with his family to London very early, still at the beginning of the 1960s.
Always very involved with the local Black community, he began singing in the early 1970s and later became a relevant figure in the Lovers Rock scene, embracing the rhythm while carrying much Black consciousness into his music.
See this and other legends who have already left us in the special "In Memoriam" section.
(Listen to "Jah Wonderful")
He signed with Virgin Records and released 2 successful albums (I Sus, from 1976, and Rasta, from 1977), in addition to partnerships with Jah Shaka on some productions.
One of his most cherished compositions is “Freedom Fighter”, an obligatory presence in the case of any Roots Reggae lover. A difficult loss, especially because of the circumstances. Rest in peace, Mr. Freedom Fighter.
