Big Mountain recorded their first song, "Wake Up", in 1992 — a Jamaican reggae/pop blend that earned strong reviews and reached number 1 on the CMJ World Music Charts. The single’s success led to a deal with RCA Records and, in 1994, the massive hit cover "Baby I Love Your Way" (originally by Peter Frampton) which reached high chart positions and appeared on the film soundtrack for "Reality Bites."\r\r\nThe album "Unity" (1994) included that hit; subsequent releases were "Resistance" (1995) and "Free Up" (1997). Tensions with Giant Records culminated with a split in 1998. After a hiatus the band returned with "Things To Come" (released November 2, 1999), a self‑produced record that continued their established sound. Standout tracks include "Jealousy", "Island Of Love", "Only One" and "Rainbow People." Being outside constant pop media attention allowed Big Mountain to reaffirm their musical identity and produce coherent, rooted songs.
