Don Carlos: roots legend and former Black Uhuru returns to Brazil for República do Reggae

Read article

June 29, 1952 had a special glow. Euvin Spencer was born in the Waterhouse district - Kingston - Jamaica. Don Carlos, as he is better known to his fans, had a rather difficult childhood. The place where the idol was born (the same place he still lives) was marked by crime (at 6 in the evening, not even Taxis dared to drive through). Don Carlos earned the nickname "Don" (which in Jamaica means someone respected, feared) thanks to the popularity he gained in the community, where even with violence frightening the entire population, he walked the streets at any hour without being bothered.

In 1965, Don Carlos made his first recording at "Federal Studios" in Kingston. The artist gained international fame starting in 1983, when DJ Ken Williams began promoting shows with other big names such as Eek a Mouse and Chalice for thousands of people at Manhattan College in New York. Since then his music has taken him to Africa, Europe, South America, the United States and many islands in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Besides his solo career, Don Carlos achieved great success as vocalist of the group Black Uhuru, a trio formed in 1974 with Duckie Simpson and Rudolph Dennis. However, with the first formation of Uhuru, Carlos only recorded one single, very rare among Reggae collectors today. The artist only returned to Black Uhuru in 1990 and recorded two albums: "Now" and "Iron Storm", soon after returning to his solo career. Carlos says the inspiration for his music is the world he traveled and the diverse people he met where he was able to develop his education and culture. Don Carlos sings optimism in his songs, bringing listeners a message of respect always.
