Geraldo Cristal was born in the historical town of Cachoeira in the interior of Bahia, on the banks of the Paraguassú River — a region often called "The Reggae Stronghold of Bahia." Home to artists such as Edson Gomes, Nengo Vieira and Sine Calmon, Cachoeira produced another authentic local reggae voice in Geraldo Cristal, who began to appear on main FM stations in Salvador.\r\r\nHis first record, "Reggae Essência," features 12 tracks addressing social issues such as the struggle to find work and low wages. Spiritual themes appear in "Ciência do Espírito" with devotional lines praising the Lord. Rastafari philosophy is present in songs like "Babilônia Para Baixo," while "Carta ao Presidente" tackles housing crises and the reality of favelas.\r\r\nGeraldo Cristal speaks the language of his people, using percussive elements and cultural references drawn from Bahia. His work benefited from the support of local reggae figures such as Clovis Rabelo and radio programs that promoted the genre.
