Judy Mowatt was born in Kingston in 1952. In the mid-1960s, she was a backing vocalist alongside Beryl Lawson and Merle Clemonson (together they were known as "The Gaylettes", also known as "Gaytones"). When Beryl and Merle moved to the United States in 1970, Judy began her solo career. Judy Mowatt recorded and partnered with major names due to contractual complications.

For example, one of the tracks, "The Gardner", which she recorded with Julianne, can be found on the album "The Heptones & Their Friends Vol. 1&2' (Trojan, UK). Judy joined the Twelve Tribes of Israel and Freddy McGregor. Later, Dennis Brown also came aboard. At the same time, she began investing in her own label, "Ashandan". She became a global icon when, in 1974, Marcia Griffiths and Rita Marley formed the I-Threes, providing backing vocals for Bob Marley & Wailers.

Beyond that, she continued her solo career. When Bob Marley built his studio, Tuff Gong, in Kingston, the album "Black Woman" was the first to be recorded there. This album is said to be the finest of the untouchable female artist of Roots Rock Reggae.
