Guitarist and composer Leo H invited Zé Natálio, Fernando and Serginho Moah to form a band, as he had known them for a long time in Porto Alegre. Formed in 1993, the gaúchos of Papas da Língua began their career through soap opera producers who picked their songs for soundtracks. The first was "Encontros Amargos" on the soap opera Cara & Coroa, in 1995. Another was "Garotas do Brasil" which was part of the soundtrack of the teen soap opera Malhação. Director Jorge Furtado chose the song "No Calor da Hora" as the theme for his film Houve uma Vez Dois Verões.

The first recorded album bore the same name as the band and was released in 1995. On the second work, Xá-la-lá, they re-recorded B. J. Thomas's "Rock´n Roll Lullaby". On this album, the group found more of a pop or pop rock style and a mix of pop-reggae, plus a bit of black groove. On Babybum, released in 2000, with a more rock side, Caetano Veloso's "Baby" was re-recorded. On the group's fourth album, "Sorte" was the song played alongside Adriana Calcanhoto. On this work, they re-recorded the Ramones' "Pet Sematary" with a roots reggae rhythm.

In 2004, on Ao Vivo Acústico, the group brought successful songs to the stage in celebration of 10 years of career, with two unreleased songs and the re-recordings had a new look as it was an acoustic album. Director Jayme Monjardim selected the song "Eu Sei" for the soundtrack of the soap opera Páginas da Vida. The group also participated in one of the scenes of the plot. The band's most recent album, Papas da Língua – Ao Vivo, was released on DVD and earned the group a gold record.
