Stephen Robert Nesta Marley (born April 20, 1963) is a Jamaican musician and the son of Reggae legend Bob Marley and his wife, Rita Marley. It is also known by the pseudonym 'Raggamuffin'. Stephen Marley was part of the reggae ensemble Melody Makers with his family members Ziggy Marley, Cedella, and Sharon.
In 1971, at the age of 8, Stephen turned to vocals and sang "Sugar Pie", which he also performed live at the 1982 Jamaica World Music Festival in Montego Bay. In 1985, Stephen was featured on a single called "Jah Is The Healing", a release by Jamaican record label Tuff Gong, and again on "Lord We A Come" in 1986, when the Melody Makers released "Hey World".
Stephen was a producer for his brother Julian Marley and also produced 3 solo albums - by his other brother - Damian Marley, the most notable and even Grammy-winning, "Welcome to Jamrock" (2005). In this one he even performed on the tracks "All Night", "Pimpa’s Paradise", "For the Babies", and "Hey Girl".
In 2003, Stephen and Damian released the album "Called Educated" together, with a group called Marley Boyz. They recorded under the Ghetto Youths International and Tuff Gong International labels, collaborating with many other reggae artists, including brother Ky-mani Marley.
Stephen Marley performed at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival. When Stephen decided to step into the spotlight, he wasn't messing around. His debut album was "Mind Control", released on March 20, 2007. He won a Grammy right away. Still with "Mind Control", but in an acoustic version, he won his second Grammy in 2010. Do you think it's over? On his third album - "Revelation Pt 1 - The Root of Life" (2012) - Stephen gets his THIRD Grammy award. There are 3 awards in just 4 years.
Before, there had only been doubles. One with Ziggy Marley (1989 and 1990) and then with Shabba Ranks (1992 and 1993). It's true that Stephen's 3 Grammys come every other year (2008, 2010, 2012), but he only released three albums, all three of which achieved the top prize in world music.
