Gilberto Gil will release a tribute to Bob Marley on Abolition Day! Check it out!

Gilberto Gil carefully chose the release date of his new and eagerly awaited CD, Kaya n'gan daya, in which he pays tribute to Bob Marley, one of reggae's great exponents: May 13, Slave Abolition Day. "The date has everything to do with it. Although it is celebrated in Brazil, the struggle of Black people is really one and the same throughout the world. And Marley knew how to translate that very well in his songs," Gilberto Gil explained to Reuters while watching fellow Bahian Maria Bethânia's show on Monday in Rio de Janeiro. A fan of the Jamaican singer, Gil went to Bob Marley's homeland to gather information about Marley and record the images that will be part of a DVD directed by Lula Buarque. For him, one of the most moving scenes is Gil's reunion with Bob's widow, Rita Marley.

The Bahian singer also said that part of the album was recorded in Jamaica. His admiration for Marley dates back a long time, since the 1970s, and it is known that the Jamaican spent a season at Gilberto Gil's house in Salvador shortly before dying in May 1981. "I'm happy to be able to honor a friend," Gil said. "Besides, work done with care turns out much better. I went to Jamaica several times because of this work and I'm sure the CD will have great impact in Brazil." "In Bahia it's already a sure success because of the interaction we have with the Caribbean islands and, above all, with Marley's reggae," the composer added.
