70s. A new, strong rhythm with hot beats begins to echo on the radio stations that liven up the party clubs, in neighborhoods on the outskirts of São Luís do Maranhão. It's Jamaican reggae, which mixes in the sequences with seresta, carimbó and other ballroom dance rhythms. In a short time, the rhythm was added to Maranhão popular culture. Today, bands and composers produce music at its best in roots reggae.
And it is for these composers from local and national bands who spread the best of roots reggae that Universidade Federal do Maranhão will promote on the 24th and 25th of November this year, the 11th Festival Universitário de Reggae. Unireggae is a promotion of UFMA through the departments of Assuntos Culturais/ Proex and Comunicação Social/CCSo, in partnership with Governo do Maranhão, through Secretaria da Cultura.
The festival's coordinator, Euclides Moreira Neto, informs that the 11th Unireggae aims to "reveal new talents and is open to composers and performers who may or may not have a phonographic record, whether they are university students or not. But the Festival will only accept songs set to the rhythm of reggae. Competing songs must have compositions of original new lyrics and melodies written in Portuguese", he notes Euclides Moreira.
He further explains that unreleased songs are "those that have never been awarded, recorded or edited. Original songs are those that are not imitations, plagiarisms or copies of other compositions already on the market." Our selection committee is strict in complying with the standards established by the Unireggae regulations", declares Euclides Moreira. Registration will be open from March 31st to May 30th/2008.
