The editor of the autobiography of Ky-Mani Marley, one of Bob Marley's sons, announced this Tuesday that he had reached an agreement with the author, who had threatened to sue him for distorting his ideas in the book, in which he harshly criticizes his father's widow.
"Ky-Mani Marley and the publisher reached an agreement, we made a modification and there is nothing that could lead to a fight," said Farrah Gray, owner of the publishing house, to AFP. By the agreement, the publisher committed to make a change on the book cover, but keeps the rest of the content, despite the strong questions initially raised by Ky-Mani Marley. The book "Dear Dad" (Dear Dad) by Ky-Mani Marley was published on February 6, the date on which the global reggae icon would have turned 65, and it became a real headache for the Marley family.
"I did not expect Gray to act in such an unprofessional and malicious way, modifying words or using elements that were spoken in private, to create controversy in an attempt to sell the book," complained Ki-Mani Marley in a statement on his MySpace page.
"The book was not an attack on my family. I love my brothers and sisters more than anyone," he said. As part of the agreement, a sentence on the book cover that states "the story the Marley family apparently did not want you to know" will be removed from the second edition, the publisher indicated.
Among many details of family life, the book tells how Ki-Mani Marley was for years excluded from the fortune generated by his father's legacy by Bob Marley's widow, Rita, who, according to the publication, refused to give financial support to the musician's children born outside marriage. According to Bob Marley's official page, the Jamaican reggae legend had 10 children, with his wife Rita and with six other women.
