Unprecedented, BAMBAS DOIS (Soul City) is a project that unites Brazilian and Jamaican culture in an unprecedented way. On the same album, they compose, create and play together some of Jamaica's greatest artists and representatives of various generations and aspects of national music, mainly those from the north and northeast. It all started in the head of producer BiD, who has always been involved with innovative musical experiences, including the most important album of the 90s, Afrociberdelia, by Chico Science and Nação Zumbi. The idea came up when BiD was on a boat in Jamaica and played Chico César's album that he had just produced, “Francisco, Forró y Frevo”, and the boat's driver started following the lyrics and singing along. “Then I had a moment” – highlights BiD.
Some time later, alongside producer Gustah, BiD went to Jamaica taking 13 compositions, several in partnership with Fernando Nunes, in the form of pre-recorded bases by Brazilians. Arriving there, after a very careful pre-production, he met with 13 representatives of the Jamaican music scene. Each one composed the lyrics of the song they sang, often in partnership with the Brazilians.
"The kinship between Jamaican and Northeastern rhythms is evident, but their combination resulted in a third thing that is neither reggae nor forró. The songs were reborn", says BiD. In total there are 13 new tracks and a version of “Something”, a Beatles classic, now performed by Luciano, accompanied by master Ernest Ranglin on guitar.
After having made their pre-premiere at NATURA NÓS (April 2011), BAMBAS DOIS will have two more performances in Brazil: on March 24th at SESC Pompéia and on the 28th in Rio, at the Sonoridades festival. This time BiD welcomes 5 special guests: from Jamaica will come Luciano "The Messenjah", who is performing for the first time in Brazil after 20 years of career, Jesse Royal, who was also in Natura Nós and performs with Karina Buhr one of the most intense songs on the album and the charismatic Priest Tiger. Brazilian Anelis Assumpção also participates in the show, singing “Chiquinha Hey”, composed by Arnaldo Antunes, BiD and Betão Aguiar.
In addition to the guests, BiD (guitar and vocals) put together a top-notch band: Felipe Pinaud (Orquestra Imperial/guitar and flute), Xuxa Levy (keyboards and flutes), Ricardo Prado (accordion), Décio 7 (Bixiga 70/percussion), Tiquinho (Funk Como Le Gusta/trombone), Marlon Sette (Orquestra Imperial/trombone), Eder “O Rocha” (Master Ambrósio/percussion), James Mu (Funk Como Le Gusta/percussion), Dada Yute (vocals) and Dj Gustah (MPC and Effects).
They will play songs from the BAMBAS DOiS repertoire such as “Music for All”, “Little Johnny”, “Something”, “Chiquinha Hey”, “Lehá Dodi” and Only Jah Love, as well as classic reggae "No, No, No", with Anelis Assumpção, "Cadaver", by Karina Buhr, and a surprise tribute to Bob Marley to close the show.
