When great icons pass away, we always think about all the years of their career and all the legacy they left. This time the big name is Wayne Smith, who unfortunately didn't manage to live long enough to write more of his beautiful story at Jah's pace.
The singer succumbed to a heart attack and passed away yesterday in a public hospital in Kingston, aged just 48.
Jamaican, Smith recorded the hit "Under me Sleng Teng" in 1985, which is considered a landmark in the ragga genre, and was based on Eddie Cochran's riff, "Somethin’ Else". Created on a Casio MT-40 (practically a toy keyboard), the riddim is a classic to this day.
In 1989 he moved to New York and established himself by founding his own record label, Sleng Teng Records. R.I.P.
Check out this and other legends that have already left us, in the special section "In Memoriam".
