Jamaican artist Noel Williams, better known as King Sporty, passed away on January 5th in Miami. He was a musician, producer and DJ, and became known internationally for being one of the composers of ’Buffalo Soldier’, a classic immortalized in the voice of Bob Marley, and also for having another song of his ("Self Destruct") sampled by the pop star Justin Timberlake.
Sporty began his career alongside Coxsone Dodd in Studio One in the 60s, and in 1965 he released his first track, "El Cid". In addition to reggae, he also worked with funk, disco, electro funk and other rhythms while living in the United States.
In 2010 he received recognition from IRAWMA (International Reggae and World Music Awards), a kind of "Grammy" of Reggae and World Music with the "Lifetime Achievement" award. Rest in peace, King!
