Born in Cachoeira de São Felix, Bahia, 120 km from Salvador, on July 3, 1955, Edson Gomes in the ardor of adolescence thought of becoming a soccer star. At 16, however, the musical tendency was stronger and he embraced an artistic career, winning first place at a student festival at the state school in his hometown. The song was "Todos devem carregar sua cruz". The difficulties of the beginning led the young man to abandon his studies and enter the job market. He was employed in the construction sector and simultaneously wove his musical path: he recorded a single as best interpreter of the Festival Canta Bahia, and another for the Caymmi trophy, when he won with the song Rasta. In 1982 Edson moved to São Paulo and found his musical vein in the Reggae of Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his artistic life, and in 1988 recorded his first LP for EMI: Reggae Resistência, from which came Samarina, an absolute success in Salvador, and Malandrinha which made him known in the media.
In 1990, he released Recôncavo and two years later his third LP, Campo de Batalha. Success spread throughout the Northeast and Brazil. Edson was in demand for shows in Alagoas, Sergipe, Maranhão, Bahia for audiences of 5,000 people. In 1996, he opened the show for Alpha Blondy in Salvador at Costa Verde Tênis Clube, where he played for almost 22,000 people who sang his songs. It was the biggest Reggae event of the year in Bahia. Resgate Fatal arrived in 1995, also on CD. The album, an absolute sales success and on the radio with the track Isaac. EMI rescued the artist's old hits in its "Meus Momentos" series (volumes 1 and 2) with great acceptance by the public. There is no denying it, Edson Gomes's songs are inspired by the social dramas of everyday life, hence their political connotation, which finds echo in cultural, union and student movements.
The album "Apocalipse" is no exception. It brings hard-hitting songs like Camelô (Edson Gomes / Zé Paulo Oliveira), O pais é o culpado and Apocalipse (also by the author), but the surprise is that this time Edson Gomes explores his romantic side in songs like Perdido de amor (Edson Gomes), Amor sem compromisso, Me abrace and others.
