Tribo de Jah holds first career show entirely for visually impaired together with Raízes Rasta!

The biggest reggae band in South America, with five visually impaired members in its lineup, holds a benefit show with all fees donated to ADEVIG (Association of Visually Impaired People of Guarulhos). Tribo de Jah, one of the country's most renowned bands and one of the most respected in world reggae, brings to KVA on August 21 a benefit show awaited for more than 10 years by its members. The beneficiary organization is ADEVIG (Association of Visually Impaired People of Guarulhos). Although acclaimed hits like "Ruínas da Babilônia" and "Reggae na Estrada" are easily heard on radios across Brazil and immediately associated with the band, many people are unaware that five of its six members are visually impaired. Formed by Fauzi Beydoun (singer and songwriter, the only non-disabled member), Zé Orlando (singer, the only one with partial vision), Aquiles (bass), Netinho (guitar), Frazão (keyboards) and Joãozinho (drums), its story began at the School for the Blind in Maranhão, where the five disabled musicians met and became friends. It was in this context that radio host Fauzi Beydoun emerged, born in São Paulo and a great aficionado of reggae culture. São Luís, as many may not know, became in the 1980s the Brazilian capital of reggae. The Jamaican rhythm first invaded the ghettos and then took over the entire city — from there, reaching the interior and neighboring states was just a step. And it was against this backdrop of reggae effervescence that Tribo de Jah set out to spread its roots reggae to the core, with messages of love, peace and social politics — always overflowing with religiosity and positivity. Such stances ended up distancing Tribo from major record labels, radio, TV and newspapers. Independently, Tribo de Jah kept doing shows and promoting its records. Today they have a label and distribution with national and international reach. During these fifteen years on the road the band accumulated experience and an enviable show résumé. They toured all of Brazil, from Belém to Porto Alegre, passing through Canecão and Metropolitam in Rio, and Palace and Olimpia in São Paulo. They did some international tours (Buenos Aires in Argentina and Cayenne in French Guiana, plus a European tour passing through countries such as France and Italy). But without a doubt, the band's greatest pride was performing on the main stage of world reggae, the REGGAE SUNSPLASH FESTIVAL - JAMAICA 95. Finally, a résumé that confirms the very special moment on the path Tribo de Jah has been treading toward inevitable recognition of its work both in Brazil and abroad.

THE SHOW

"We always thought about creating a show entirely dedicated to NGOs that care about the blind, after all achieving professional and financial success as a visually impaired person is almost impossible, especially in Brazil. Our routine is not easy," declares Aquiles, the band's bassist. The idea of doing a benefit show began to take shape when one of the band's musicians started collaborating with ADEVIG (Association of Visually Impaired People of Guarulhos), an organization that provides nearly 250 free meals daily to visually impaired people. "The most impressive thing is that the need is so great that there are disabled people who every day come from other municipalities and distant places just for lunch," declares Aquiles. ADEVIG offers lectures, Braille classes, vocational courses and other activities trying to help visually impaired people reintegrate into society. "One of the biggest problems the blind face is prejudice and loneliness," notes Joãozinho, the band's drummer. Both Tribo de Jah and Rádio 89FM, KVA, Gráfica Cinelândia, Rent All Shows and the professionals involved fully and entirely waived all fees in favor of ADEVIG. The event's funds will be entirely directed to the NGO for maintenance and creation of new projects, given the various difficulties this type of institution usually faces.
