Rockers - "It’s Dangerous" turns 30 years old, maintaining the status of "Reggae's Cinematic Masterpiece". In 1976, Ted Bafaloukos made a proposal to Patrick Hulsey which consisted of making a documentary about Reggae. Ted, who had already traveled to Jamaica several times, had built a relationship of friendship and partnership with several musicians and producers on the island. After a long conversation with Patrick, Ted convinced him to produce the film that would go down in Reggae history. Still in 1976, the year in which they traveled to Jamaica 3 times, they both met big names like Burning Spear, producer Jack Ruby, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall, as well as Lee Perry and Kiddus-I, who encouraged them to move forward.
"Horsemouth" and "Dirty Harry" were the duo's and their team's guides through Jamaica and it was no coincidence that they became the two stars of the film, which caused a real "told-me-told" among the Jamaican Reggae community at the time. At the end of 1976, they finally managed to film some footage of what the film would be like and took it to New York, where they looked for some investors willing to finance the masterpiece.
Financial obstacles overcome, the film began filming in the summer of 1977 and resumed in the winter of 1978, the year in which Bob Marley returned to Jamaica after the assassination attempt he suffered at his home in the capital Kingston - in 1976. During this time Marley went into exile in the Bahamas and only returned for one of the most important shows ever promoted in Jamaica - the "One Love Peace Concert".
The film Rockers was filmed at a critical moment in local politics, where there was a huge rivalry between the JLP (Jamaica Labor Party) and the PNY (Peoples National Party). The JLP, a right-wing Jamaican party, was supported by the United States and led by Edward Seaga, while the PNY was led by Michael Manley, elected Prime Minister in 1976, when the team responsible for the film visited the Island in search of artists willing to take on the challenge.
The two rival parties created a real Civil War in the Jamaican capital, fought mainly between young people who were recruited to "fight" for each other's political interests. These young people were called "Rude-boys" and formed real gangs of outlaws who fought against the police and promoted terror in Kingston. The security problem on the Island was so serious that in 1977, 10 thousand dollars raised by Ted Bafaloukos and Patrick Hulsey for the production of the film were stolen by a gang of "rude-boys" in the safe of the Hotel where the team was staying. Amidst a hail of gunfire, the producers realized that they did not have the easiest task on their hands.
Despite the widespread confusion, the film Rockers was filmed in a relaxed atmosphere, satisfying its creators, despite all the difficulties. With several world-famous artists participating in the film, it quickly gained visibility on the Island and in various places around the world, where it was and continues to be acclaimed by the public and critics. None other than Burning Spear, Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall, Kiddus I, Leroy Smart, Ian and Roger Lewis (Inner Circle), the duo Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare, Big Youth, Errol Thompson, Dillinger, Jack Ruby, among others no less important who made Rockers the greatest film about Reggae ever made, participated in the film.
Rockers tells an emotional story that takes place in the ghettos of Jamaica, where, like many places in the world, the poor are oppressed by the dominant rich minority. We won't tell you more about the story, so as not to lose the fun. Just watching and having your own emotions. A lot of reggae, roots and culture can be seen in the film, which is undoubtedly an essential title for any Reggae lover. It was recently released in Brazil with subtitles in Portuguese and can be purchased at the main stores in the sector.
