Aston Barrett, former bassist for reggae singer Bob Marley, claimed this Thursday in the United Kingdom's High Court of Justice around 88 million euros (around US$107.2 million or R$226.4 million) from the inheritance of the Jamaican musician, who died 25 years ago. The musician claims the copyright for the recording contracts that he and his brother Carlton, who died in 1987, had signed with Marley between 1974 and 1975, in addition to the profits relating to the six songs he composed with the artist.
In his court speech, Barret's lawyer, Stephen Taco, stated that his client and his brother, the group's drummer, gave Marley's music a unique sound, which contributed to the success of reggae around the world. Taco explained that Marley and the Barrett brothers signed their first contract with the Island label in 1974, a year after the singer's original band, The Wailers, disbanded with the departure of musicians Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston.
Aston Barrett then promised Marley to rebuild the group with new musicians. "Bob agreed and decided to form a new band, dividing the money equally," said the lawyer. He highlighted that this first contract included the names of the Barrett brothers and Marley. After the success of their first album, "Natty Dread", the band signed a second contract to produce six other albums.
The lawyer explained that the Barretts' financial problems began after Marley's death in 1981, when his widow became administrator of his legacy. Barrett is one of several musicians who have worked with the Jamaican idol.
