Fogo Queima! Everything that happened at Black Uhuru's performance in Salvador — exclusive!
The expectations were very high. Black Uhuru, commanded by Michael Rose and Duckie Simpson, disembarked at 4:30 pm at Salvador on February 19, 2007, on an international flight originating directly from Paris. At night, at Porto da Barra, a postcard of the capital of Bahia, the members of Black Uhuru were in the middle of the public, waiting for the moment to get on the electric trio and perform the show together with the band Cidade Negra, which would extend to the Ondina neighborhood, a route that takes around 5 hours to cover. Accompanying the electric trio, many foreign tourists were seen who were probably attracted by the presence of the Jamaican group, one of the largest and best known in the world. The Skol D+ block remained crowded the entire time, a highly positive fact that shows that the Reggae is very strong and should have its place in the Bahian carnival. Also present at the party was André Derizans, who began his musical career when he recorded the song "Tudo de Bom" with Pato Banton, one of Brasil's biggest reggae hits. This song was Derizans' passport to the world reggae scene, leading the duo "André e Pato" to play hundreds of shows across Brasil, Europe and EUA.
The Rio group Cidade Negra started the Reggae night at the Skol block, inviting Michael Rose and Duckie Simpson to participate in part of their performance. The moments in which "Cidade", a band with much respect on the national scene, called on the members of Black Uhuru, were summed up as a Tribute to Bob Marley, or the infamous “Legend”, that is, Bob Marley's most popular and popular songs. As a result, many people who went to see the Jamaicans were a little disappointed. Promising a full set from Black Uhuru, which would be presented from the middle to the end of the tour, Cidade Negra vocalist, Toni Garrido, brought hope to Black Uhuru fans, who were spread out inside and outside the Skol block. However, this did not fully happen. Most of the media (TV, radio, etc.) that covered the carnival on Barra, turned their backs on the passage of the Reggae block from Skol, clearly showing prejudice, colonial culture and segregation, elements unfortunately present in the minds of most people who are part of the mass media. Fya bun dem! As mentioned, the Black Uhuru just showed what it is capable of. Michael Rose showed that he is at the top of his game and at all times interacted with the thousands of people who filled the avenue and all the streets along the route Barra-Ondina in Salvador. It is not known what happened, but Black Uhuru's entire set was limited to a few songs, which were performed without any quality in the electric trio's sound.
A strange fact, since at the time of the Cidade Negra show the sound was perfect, while at the main attraction – Black Uhuru, you could only hear a solo guitar, minimal vocals, no drums, bass or keyboards. Even frustrated with the sound, fans of Uhuru, which means Freedom, went wild with classics like “Shine Eye Gal”, “Party in Session” and “I Love King Selassie”. Despite all the setbacks, Skol, the creators of the block and everyone responsible for inserting a major attraction from the international Reggae into Carnaval de Salvador deserve congratulations. It is hoped that this initiative will continue, and that in the coming years the biggest street party in the world will be blessed with another great presence from a major international artist in Jamaican music.  Big Up Caribé, Randy, Délia (Press Office)
