Cherry Green, one of the original Wailers backing vocalists, dies!
Cherry Green, as she was better known, was one of the female voices that colored the backing vocals of the original Wailers, even before Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt. Ermine Ortense Bramwell, her given name, was born in August 1943, in Jamaica, and recently lived in Palm Beach Gardens (Florida, United States). It was also known as Cherry Smith, but popularly as Cherry Green. On September 24, 2008, Cherry succumbed to a heart attack and passed away. "She was one of the backing singers who helped immortalize the style," says Christopher John Farley, author of "Before the Legend: The Rise of Bob Marley" - or "Before the Legend: The Rise of Bob Marley." "Everyone called her Cherry because she was red!" says "Sir Henry" Eccleston, a DJ at WBAI in New York (USA), who grew up with Cherry in TrenchTown, Jamaica. He also said that even her mother called her Cherry. As a teenager, she joined Bob Marley and future members Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh and Junior BraithWait, and another backup singer, Beverly Kelso.
