The world bids farewell to one of ska's greatest geniuses: goodbye to Byron Lee! See it on Surforeggae!
Byron Lee, founder of one of the first and most important Ska bands in Jamaica, Dragonaires, passed away at the age of 73, a victim of cancer. Leaving behind six children and his wife, Byron was admitted to the University of the West Indies Hospital, in Jamaica, where on Tuesday, November 4, he succumbed to the disease. The musician founded the group Byron Lee & The Dragonaires in 1956, having scored a series of ska and calypso hits, and even famous riddims played to this day by bands such as The Gladiators and Roots Radics. In 1964, Byron Lee bought the "West Indies Recording Limited" label, where he managed to attract the attention of names like The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. Without a doubt another great loss for the world of music.
