The Bahian recôncavo, a region located around Baía de Todos os Santos (Bahia), is one of the birthplaces of reggae in Brazil. Cities such as Santo Amaro, Cachoeira and São Félix became known for the emergence of names like Edson Gomes, Sine Calmon, Nengo Vieira and Dissidência. Salvador was the first capital of Brazil to have a reggae day on its calendar. In 2012, then-president Dilma signed the national day law that celebrates the representativeness of reggae music and culture in the country. Other cities such as Camaçari (BA), São Luís (MA) and São Paulo (SP) already have their municipal reggae day and Santo Amaro, in the Bahian recôncavo, has just joined the list.

Through bill project no. 56/2017, the Santo Amaro City Council made January 24 the municipal reggae day. The choice of date is also a tribute to the band Dissidência, which will complete 25 years of history on that date. Dissidência is led by vocalist Val Caetano and is one of the forces of reggae in the recôncavo, especially in the interior of the state. They have also been present at several editions of República do Reggae, the largest festival of the genre in the country. país.
