Everything was ready for the Bob Marley tribute in Vinhedo, to celebrate 22 years without the king, when on May 11, 1981 he left us. Two years ago, the event was held at Anhembi in São Paulo, where it drew more than 50,000 people, a record for the venue and for an event dedicated to the rhythm of Jah; however, violence took over that year. Among those who could not get tickets to enter, the confrontation with the police outside was severe, more like a war zone. Perhaps for this reason the event was not held again in São Paulo, neither in 2001 nor 2002. The Kawipy company from Jundiaí proposed holding the event in the city of Vinhedo, in the interior of São Paulo. Some excursions were organized from São Paulo, Jundiaí, ABC, Campinas and the region. The party promised much, as the city of Vinhedo has a strong reggae scene. All shows held there are crowd successes and peaceful. With this expectation, the Surforeggae team traveled to Vinhedo to cover the event. The party started at 6:00 p.m. with the band Regueiros Brasileiros and continued with the bands: I on I, Reggae Spirit, Sensimilla and Expressão Regueira. Bands unknown to the general public, but that hold their own in quality and respect. See the Surforeggae reggae bands section and learn more about these names. Next on stage came the band Raízes Rasta, who are about to release their new work. The band is very well known in the region and gets the crowd singing along with great receptivity. Then came Planta & Raiz, who are no longer a revelation but a reality on the national scene. They warmed up the crowd with songs that have long been on everyone's lips. Highly applauded, they left the stage thanking the audience's recognition and very satisfied with their performance. While the Natiruts team prepared the stage, DJ Zambol hit the crowd with a strong roots reggae sequence. When perhaps the most awaited moment for most of those present arrived, one of the bands that achieved the most success with reggae in Brazil, singing the best-known songs and some Bob Marley and Tim Maia covers, the band Natiruts. They closed the Bob Marley tribute with a golden key, worthy of the king... with lots of reggae and peace, thus remembering 22 years without the greatest artist of the century. A crowd success with almost 8,000 people, and the Kawipy team deserves praise for organizing such a well-run event.
