Reggae is no longer made like it used to be. This phrase may seem old and common, but it very well portrays the moment in which our country's music scene finds itself. Reggae became a product and, for the most part, a very bad one. Even though they are bad, these products are only at the "crest of the wave", as there is an audience to consume them, and the biggest responsible for this poor merchandise is the unscrupulous media, which tremendously brainwashes listeners, who do not have the opportunity to listen to what we call true "Reggae Music", whether roots or not. In this way, the public is forced to be content with what is disclosed and cannot get to know the pioneers of the jah rhythm.
Artists like U Roy, who started livening up the dances as a sound-system DJ, or also the record seller from Pará, the radiola owner Riba Macedo, who started playing reggae among the forrós and merengues in São Luís. Not to mention the national Jurassic songs, Chico Evangelista, who sang "Reggae da Independência", and Raimundo Sodré, famous thanks to the reggae "A Massa". Edson Gomes in Bahia, Luís Vagner, Jualê, Walking Lions and João Terra in São Paulo, Dionorina, Ras Bernardo in the suburbs of Rio and many others that I could mention, the “reggae bambas”, are forgotten by the mass media.
There are some that we have never even heard of, and that unfortunately, are no longer with us, but could never be forgotten. Their songs represent the best. These are riches that those who lived at the time miss. Especially because the bombardment of songs with poor melodic lines and mischaracterized lyrics is so great that Reggae has become a true fad. What I complain about is precisely the lack of common sense on the part of the media and producers who do not give us the chance to live with good taste and ridicule. Nowadays we can only live with the second option, causing our minds to become vague and we more easily accept poor and meaningless things.
As a press professional, I have already had the opportunity to listen to several personalities who make good Reggae, including those who we consider to be the good part, and everyone was unanimous in stating that they analyze the current music market as something without renewal. Although some good values are emerging, they are soon forced to enter the “current axis” and end up becoming guinea pigs and cheap copies of record companies and producers who maintain a monopoly on the scene.
You need to wake up! Let's not leave the late and true pioneers of National Reggae in oblivion. Enough of damaging Bob Marley's image with a month of random tributes that promote the contradiction of his thoughts!
Do only “gringos” see our good music? If you notice, in each musical style there is a group or singer who raised the flag and represented that team's shirt in style. Enough of the neglect. In our country alone, we face neglect from authorities in health, security, education and other areas that I don't even need to mention. In Reggae, even if we have to go underground again, there is still time to change!
