Son of one of the most revolutionary artists international music has ever had, Andrew Tosh is not just physically similar to his father. His voice, identical to that of the great Peter Tosh, continues to enchant the world and his performances are a true show reliving great moments and great hits of Reggae. In this exclusive interview, which could not have happened without the help of my great friend Geraldo Carvalho, Andrew Tosh talks about his career, myths about his relationship with his family, among other controversial topics. Andrew was very objective and not afraid to answer any question at all times, taking all the issues that were addressed seriously.
1 – Andrew, tell us a little about the lifestyle you lead and what effects this has on your artistic career.
Andrew: I have been giving professional presentations for 18 years.
2 – How was the relationship you had with your father, the great Peter Tosh? When you were young, did he ever express a desire for you to continue what he was doing?
Andrew: I played the piano together with Peter, and he revealed that he would like me to continue his work.
3 – Were you close friends with Bob Marley’s children growing up? What is the relationship you have with them today? Has anything changed or is it still the same?
Andrew: Yes, they are my friends to this day and our relationship remains the same.
4 – What is your intention in always singing Peter Tosh songs at shows?
Andrew: Peter Tosh's songs are part of my shows, because people expect it. Another fact is as I said above, he would like me to continue his work.
5 – Most critics say that the Rolling Stones made a commercial move by partnering with Peter Tosh. What do you think of this event?
Andrew: Nothing much, just advertising.
6 - From what you experienced, was the relationship between the Wailers (Bob, Peter and Bunny) good? Or were there too many problems between the three?
Andrew: There were some problems.
7 – There are many more tributes to Bob Marley than to Peter Tosh, despite both being considered of equal importance for Reggae. What do you think of this? Do you intend to do something to change this situation?
Andrew: The fact that there are more tributes to Bob Marley than Peter Tosh is because Bob Marley died earlier.
8 – Your talent as a musician and singer is undeniable. However, many people still insist that you are only successful because you are Peter Tosh's son and have a very similar voice to him. What do you have to say to these people?
Andrew: Critics only.
9 - Besides Peter, do you feel influenced by other reggae musicians? Which?
Andrew: Dennis Brown, Bunny Wailer, Bob Marley and many others.
10 - We know that you recorded a CD in Tribute to Peter. Don't you think about recording a DVD or CD with guest artists, like Bunny Wailer, Toots, among others who are also part of Reggae history like Peter Tosh?
Andrew: I'm going to make a DVD soon.
11 – What do you think of the Ragga/Dancehall scene that is currently present in Jamaica?
Andrew: Reggae is big in Jamaica.
12 – What is your opinion regarding the paths reggae has taken? From Rocksteady, Ska to Roots, Dub, Dancehall and Ragga? Do you think there was any loss to the rhythm with all this diversification?
Andrew: There are no new creations.
13 - The vigor and weight of your music are often compared to Rock. Are you also influenced by this style?
Andrew: No.
14 – Do you have great friendships with other Reggae artists? Which?
Andrew: Many friends, some already mentioned.
15 – Andrew, thank you very much for the interview. We at Surforeggae.com.br thank you immensely. Please leave a message for the Brazilian public.
Andrew: I love Brazil so much! They are beautiful and friendly people. JAH BLESS!
Special thanks: Geraldo Carvalho
