Saturday, February 4th started early for fans of Burning Spear at Salvador. The International Airport of the capital of Bahia was already attended by a lot of people who arrived as early as 4:50 in the morning to wait for the historic disembarkation of the idol Jamaicano. There was an uproar among people when Burning Spear (Winston Rodney) arrived around 3:40 pm with his Burning Band, giving just an impression of how the audience would be receptive to the night at the show. The stage for the historic presentation was Festival de Verão, an annual event that is in its 8th edition and is currently considered the biggest music festival in the country, having already brought other big names in reggae such as Gladiators, Maxi Priest and Big Mountain, as well as other international attractions and big names in Brazilian music.
The show started with Burning Band doing the now traditional medley with several of Burning Spear's hits. Lead guitarist “Cecil” put on a show of his own throughout the performance, dancing, jumping and interacting with the audience, who became more euphoric every minute. A real crowd followed the show, which will undoubtedly be etched in the memory of every regueiro present. Songs like “Marcus Garvey”, “Columbus”, “Jah no Dead”, “Happy day” and “Slavery days” sent Salvador into a frenzy. It was also possible to see many tourists who took advantage of their stay in the city to watch one of the biggest Reggae icons of all time.
The brass, Burning Band's trademark, impressed and gave a very special touch to the sound produced by the group. All the top-quality musicians, carefully chosen by Winston Rodney, showed great harmony with mento, giving an impeccable performance. Burning Spear sang, danced a lot and fulfilled what he promised in an interview with Surforeggae – “a different performance full of positive vibes”. The singer also performed several percussion solos that, accompanied by the band, sounded like true “extended mix” (extended version), typical instrumental versions of the songs that are part of the B side of Jamaican compacts (7” vinyl records).
The presentation lasted around an hour and twenty minutes, where Burning Spear proved that with almost 40 years of career he is in top form. The audience screamed so much at the end of the show that it made the band come back to play a few more songs. Burning said goodbye to Salvador with one word: “PAZ”. Satisfied, people were left with the best possible impression of Burning Spear, which made its first presentation at Bahia, where its arrival had been rumored for almost 10 years. After the show, the singer also gave an interview, where he told Surforeggae and those present that he intends to return to Salvador soon to learn more about Rastafari culture in the city. Winston still comentou about the reception he received at the airport and about the vibes from the people at Bahia, which were very good. We hope that Burning Spear returns to Salvador more often and continues to transmit all these positive vibes around the world for many years to come. Long live the Burning Spear!
