Try putting Dub Side of the Moon to scroll without saying what it is. Reactions will range from surprise to recognition. The feeling is that of something familiar. This groove, these lyrics... Hey, wait a minute: Pink Floyd! Reggae?! Where did that come from? The shock is as natural as it is inevitable. For messing with one of the most famous albums in the history of rock, a supreme classic from one of the bands that symbolize this whole thing. Due to the risk of recreating it in a totally different style that is often despised by the rocker. And, mainly, because it works. The album not only produces effects similar to those of the original version, but also offers other sounds, other beats, other pulsations. Nobody imagined it, but the Pink Floyd does have a leg - or head - on the Jamaica. Ninguém, comma. In 1999, the penny dropped for Lem Oppenheimer, from the New York label Easy Star. Ele knew he was dealing with sacred business, including for himself. As a teenager, he listened to the B side of Dark Side of the Moon for six consecutive months every single day before going to school. Released in 1973, LP spent more than 700 weeks on the charts, selling around 40 million copies worldwide. Exactly thirty years later, the idea that Oppenheimer had been developing reached stores under the name Dub Side of the Moon. O CD, which has since appeared on Billboard's Top Reggae, has just been published nationally by Deckdisc. O. Pink Floyd, although obeying the parameters of the Jamaican rhythm. To face the mission, musicians and producers "da casa" Michael Goldwasser (Michael G, guitarist) and Victor Axelrod (Ticklah, keyboardist) surrounded themselves with a responsible team. Bassist Victor Rice (with work with Everlast, The Slackers and New York Ska Jazz Ensemble on his resume) and drummer Patrick Dougher (Roots Combination, among others) were called in to complete the basic quartet. The highlight was the special appearances, fundamental to exploring the multiple personalities of the repertoire in question. By choosing to maintain the structure of the album that serves as its motto, Dub Side of the Moon opens up space for reggae to manifest itself, sometimes in its more traditional aspect, sometimes in its more modern guise. The nyabinghi drums (used in Rastafarian ceremonies) that replace the heartbeat in the opening of "Speak to me/Breathe" (with vocalist Sluggy Ranks) are the foreshadowing that, instead of the triangle, a ball of fire is coming. Next, "On the Run" transports the lunar atmosphere to a n’bass drum track, raising the temperature to a point where "Time" is received as the most refreshing of balms. When veteran toaster (grandfather of current rappers) Ranking Joe shouts that "time is the master", there's no way not to agree with him and hope that it won't pass. The dub that names the album appears in "The Great Gig in the Sky", immersed in the dense bass lines that characterize the genre. É the password for the situation to worsen, a suspicion confirmed by the lighters and bongs (and the consequent coughing) in place of the "Money" cash register machines, chanted by the wailer Gary "Nesta" Pine. Em "Us and them", the dancehall singer Frankie Paul asks for passage in the morning, relieving the impact of a smoke-smothered base. At this point, the brass section that simulates Gilmour's guitar in "Any Colour You Like" descends without resistance. É better not argue with anyone who is capable of converting "Brain Damage" into a standard reggae defended by Dr. Israel and "Eclipse" into a prayer prayed by Meditations. Engordam the disc four bonus tracks with the dub side displayed without shame, devastating any surviving remnants of normality. Birth, death, revelation, transience, greed, conflict, madness - whatever the suggestion, Dub Side of the Moon nails it. It worked so well that even the folkloric synchronization with the film O Mágico from Oz - "aperte o play no terceiro rugido do leão da Metro e descubra" - was preserved. And, in case you doubt how cool the Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright are, just say that they agreed with all this crazy stuff.
