DJ SassoReggae talks about being responsible for reggae programming at 1.FM Network, improvements for listeners of the former Radio ReggaeTrade, thanks listeners and opens the eyes of national bands to the space they were wasting.
Surforeggae: How do you feel being a Brazilian DJ responsible for reggae programming on an American radio network?
SassoReggae: I'm very happy, because in these 15 months with the radio at Live365, I worked hard to create quality programming, in addition to the tireless search for listeners, with the sole intention of showing people that quality reggae is infinite. Being invited to be the programming director of the 1.FM Network reggae channel, which is the 3rd most listened to internet radio network in the world, was a reward for my dedication to promoting reggae.
Surforeggae: What are the benefits for you as a DJ and for listeners?
SassoReggae: The benefits for me as a DJ are many, as I will have more freedom to create larger programs, without losing quality both in terms of song selection and audio quality, as we will have two options for the listener to choose from, who can choose to listen in broadband (CD quality) and also an option for dial-up access users, in addition to gaining more exposure, as the radio will be listed in radio directories such as Windows Media Radio Tuner, Audiorealm, Shoutcast, Itunes... which will make the radio heard by millions of listeners every month. This will all benefit the listener, who will have much more diverse programming, in CD quality, without commercials or interruptions, and without having to register or pay subscriptions.
Surforeggae: Regarding programming, will there be any changes?
SassoReggae: Yes. The first change was to eliminate the programs divided into reggae styles, now we have a program where we play a selection that ranges from classic to contemporary reggae, with an emphasis on roots reggae, but also with hints of dancehall. National reggae will also have a space, in fact much smaller, and the selection of songs will be much more rigid.
Surforeggae: What are the difficulties encountered in keeping an internet radio on the air 24 hours a day?
SassoReggae: The biggest difficulty, of course, is being able to have listeners 24 hours a day, even more so when only one person takes care of everything and has no support from anyone, save for a few exceptions, such as you at Surforeggae who have always supported me by opening up space on this great portal, directing many listeners to the radio. However, what disappoints me most is that national bands do not help promote the radio, as the radio is a great means of promoting the bands themselves and breaks down all geographical barriers, for example, a band on Rio Grande do Sul can be heard by a person on Amazonas who would never have the chance to listen to them, as most of the bands on Brasil are independent and their CDs never come out to stores outside of the state. I never understood national bands, I think they prefer to pay to have their songs played on commercial FM, rather than simply helping an independent, exclusively reggae radio station to promote their songs without charging anything for it. And if this is the truth, unfortunately it only proves the weakness of such bands.
Surforeggae: And the listeners, what is their feedback?
SassoReggae: The feedback from listeners is what makes me stronger every day, it's my salary at the end of another month. We have listeners from all parts of the world, from all languages, but who understand the universal language of reggae. Every day I receive messages of thanks for keeping the radio on the air from people who are at home, listening with their family, or under the stress of work, but in the positive vibes of the radio, even many who don't even have a computer at home but who always go to an internet cafe just to listen to our programming.
Surforeggae: Finally, what would you like to talk about?
SassoReggae: Well, actually I would like to thank 1.FM Network for trusting in my talent, thank Surforeggae once again for the space, thank all the listeners who actually helped me get to where I am and will take me to an even higher level together with the reggae that I promote so much, and finally just a message to the Brasil bands: success can only be gained through unity, Radio ReggaeTrade will always have its doors open to any band, but I only ask that you help me promote your sound.
