On this International Women's Day, we dive deep into reggae's roots to honor the women who shaped and continue to elevate this iconic musical genre. From the earliest days to the present, female voices have been essential in spreading the message of love, equality, and resistance through reggae. Looking back, we see legendary figures such as Marcia Griffiths, whose music inspired generations and whose stage presence radiated power and grace. Judy Mowatt's unique and captivating voice still echoes today, reminding us of women's strength in the struggle for justice and freedom. We cannot forget to mention the iconic Rita Marley, whose love and devotion to reggae were unmatched. Her influence as a singer echoes eternally in the positive vibrations of Jamaican music. As we move forward in time, we see new stars emerging, such as Dezarie, Mo Kalamity, Etana, Queen Ifrica, Jah9, and so many other female talents from the international scene who continue to lift reggae to new heights, keeping alive the flame of the revolutionary message this genre carries with it. In Brazil, we have also seen women's participation grow - names such as Feminine Hi-Fi, Célia Sampaio, Denise D’Paula, Filosofia Reggae, Marina Peralta, Laylah Arruda, and many others are constantly producing and representing the scene. Today, on this special day, we honor not only reggae singers, but all women around the world, whose resilience, passion, and determination shape and inspire our communities. May reggae continue to be a voice for those who seek justice, equality, and love, and may women continue to lead the way with their unique and powerful light.
