Several groups of Reggae from Salvador, such as Raiz Irredutível, Irmandade Brasmorra, Periferia Roots, Makarios, Unidade Planta de Zaire and Na Raiz, have represented humble Brazilian society, with the "Baixa em Alta" Project, which was started by people who really seek a purpose with the music. In a situation where social inequality is increasing, the country is in great need of gestures like this, which demonstrates once again the social and educational commitment that Reggae has towards society. Even with all the discrimination suffered by the originally Jamaican rhythm, several people have been fighting in the country to bring music, culture and art to needy communities.
Another great example of this is AfroReggae, in Rio de Janeiro, a model project that has transformed the reality of hundreds of needy people. In the case of the Baixa em Alta Project, events are promoted on Saturdays in a public square, without support from any Government Organization, with the purpose of collecting food, clothes, warm clothing, all destined for charities and people excluded by the Capitalist System. In addition to this social commitment, the message of positivity that is always present in the committed Reggae is donated, which always denounces lies and glorifies the truth, making people reflect a little more on the reality of the country and others.
Initiatives such as AfroReggae, the Baixa em Alta Project, among many others, should be taken as a model and even adopted by other artists who have already gained a greater space in the media, after all, one of the greatest assets that music has is the ability to help others. Unfortunately, the reality is not so simple, and gestures like this are very rare, where we see more and more artists becoming millionaires overnight, and they often forget the poor origins (or not) they had, promoting only ostentation and accumulation of wealth.
Without a doubt, we would have a slightly better world if everyone could help, not simply by giving money at a traffic light, but by investing, promoting or supporting social projects like the ones mentioned here. Society can only be grateful to the groups and people involved who truly think about change and do not deceive themselves with fame and status, but rather think about the homeless, those who feel hungry and the many without a choice.
