David Hinds, voice and founder of Steel Pulse, celebrates 70 years
Reggae fans worldwide have a reason to celebrate as David Hinds turns 70 on June 15.

The world of reggae has plenty of reasons to celebrate: on June 15, David Hinds — voice, guitar, and founder of Steel Pulse — turns 70 years old. Born in Handsworth, a working-class neighborhood in Birmingham, England, in 1956, Hinds transformed the experiences of Black British youth into songs of consciousness, resistance, and faith that have transcended generations, making him one of the most respected vocalists in the history of the genre.
It was in Handsworth that, in 1975, he gathered friends who would form Steel Pulse. From the neighborhood to the world, the group immortalized anthems like those from their debut album Handsworth Revolution — which you can relive in the live recording of the group in our archive — and made history by becoming the first non-Jamaican artist to win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album, with Babylon the Bandit, in 1985.
The Brazilian audience knows this journey well. In 2012, Surforeggae followed David Hinds' tour in Brazil in a soundsystem format and, years later, the band returned to the country in a heavy lineup alongside Groundation, Dezarie, and The Mighty Diamonds — memorable encounters that marked the artist's relationship with fans here.
The journey of Steel Pulse also carries losses that are part of its legend, such as the passing of original drummer Steve "Grizzly" Nisbett. Amidst so many stories, David Hinds has remained steadfast as the guardian of the group's original message, keeping the essence of roots reggae alive in every performance.
At 70 years old, Hinds continues to be a reference of coherence and purpose for artists and listeners around the world. Surforeggae joins the reggae community to celebrate the date: happy birthday, David Hinds — may your inspiration continue to illuminate paths and strengthen reggae culture for many, many years. Jah guide!
