Equipe Surforeggae went to Belém to check out one of the shows of one of the biggest names in the world of all time – The Gladiators. The location chosen for the event was “Mormaço”, a concert hall located at Praça do Arsenal, close to Mangal das Garças, a tourist attraction in the beautiful capital of Pará. Opening the night, the band Jaafa Reggae played their own songs and national and international covers, showing that Belém is one of the capitals of Reggae in Brazil, as a large part of the audience sang along throughout the performance.
The big attraction of the night, The Gladiators, is touring the country, having already performed in other capitals such as Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. Many other cities are coming (see full list of dates at the end of the news), and if you haven't seen the show yet, don't miss it! The group this time came without backing vocals Rudluwe Robinson, bassist Earl “Bagga” Walker and vocalist Albert Griffiths, who was absent from the group a few years ago due to health problems.
However, as reinforcement came the singer Zema, who majestically opened the show. Despite the absences, The Gladiators continues to have an excellent lineup of musicians, including legendary beasts from Reggae such as Gallimore Sutherland, Clinton Rufus, David Madden and Vernon Sutherland. In the vocals of Gladiators, Al Griffiths, son of Albert Griffiths, demonstrated that he was ready to lead the group.
Al gives a very different performance from his father, who stood very still on stage, cheering with the audience, singing and dancing to the band's greatest hits, which were received with ecstasy by the Belém audience, such as “Look is Deceiving”, “Jah Works”, “Bongo Red” and “Stick a Bush”. The repertoire also included a series of new songs such as “Promise me” from the album Father & Sons and “Trial & Crosses” from the album “Once Upon a Time in Jamaica”. As usual, the mix of dub live and reggae in its more traditional form was perfect. Long live the "Gladiadores"!
