Belém do Pará doesn't live solely on Brega, Carimbó e Calypso! Hidden due to lack of media support, one of the largest Reggae Movements in the country has remained strong for almost 30 years. One of the pioneers of Reggae in Belém is “Ras Alvin”, which has had a record stall installed in the city center for a long time, where you can find true rarities of Jamaican rhythm. The first Reggae club in Capital Pará was founded by “Ras Fernando”, in the backyard of his residence, which became known nationally as “Toca do Reggae”. The suggestive name came about due to the size of the space, which was very small. After Toca, several others appeared, such as “Espaço do Reggae”, “Coisa de Negro”, “Coco Verde”, “Porto Solamar”, among many more. Proof that Reggae is strong in Belém is the existence of radio programs with a large audience, such as “Cultura Reggae” led by Bebel Chaves, “Reggae Vibration” with Roberto Pinheiro e o “Sintonia do Reggae”, led by Enilson Nonato, who, in addition to playing Reggae, is dedicated to discussing social problems with the community. Speaking of bands, we can mention several: “Nego Jô e Leões de Soweto” (first Reggae Band in the region), “Six Marley”, “Holly Pype”, “Sevilha”, “Cristal Reggae”, “Amazon Java”, “Gaia na Gandaia”, “JAHFFA REGGAE”, “Kayamakan”, among others. In addition to the strong scene of local bands, Belém has already received (and has received) big stars from the World Reggae, such as Culture, Gregory Isaacs, Eric Donaldson, Inner Circle, Ziggy Marley & Melody Makers, Mighty Diamonds, Ijahman, The Gladiators, Clinton Fearon, Larry Marshall, Alpha Blondy, among others. In Belém there are also reggae groups, which emerged in the 90s, formed by young people living in the outskirts of the metropolitan region of the Capital of Pará. Among them, the following stand out: Movimento União pelo Reggae, Movimento Cultural Unidos pelo Reggae do Bairro da Guanabara, Movimento Reggae do Aura, Movimento Marcus Garvey e Movimento Revolução do Reggae. In their area, these groups work together with the Community Centers e the social movement, fighting for improvements in the area, such as basic sanitation, health, housing and, mainly, against racial e social prejudices. These movements are affiliated with Associação Cultural dos Movimentos de Reggae de Belém e Ananindeua – AMOR, which together with MOCAMBO forms the Conselho Municipal do Negro de Belém. For those who didn't know, Reggae is rooted in Cultura Paraense, as well as Carimbó e other rhythms, which can be heard wherever you go. Congratulations to those who made this movement a reality.
