Last June 5, 2009, a Friday, will certainly remain marked for the musicians, relatives, friends and fans of the band Mato Seco. The group that emerged in São Caetano - São Paulo is today one of the great powers of national Reggae, winning more and more fans and registering large box offices wherever it goes throughout the country. Following its path for 7 years, Mato Seco has just played at Expresso Brasil, in São Paulo, the first show of the release tour for the new CD - "Seco Mas Não Morto", which should soon pass through all of Brazil and other South American countries.
In grand style, Mato Seco prepared a series of novelties for the nearly 3 thousand fans who attended Expresso Brasil last Friday. The first was a beautiful stage set, made even more valuable by the great competence of the group’s lighting technical team. Always innovating, the producers and the band were bold enough to have only one DJ set in addition to the band, which was the only one to perform that night, something highly unusual for the São Paulo public, who always complain about marathons in which the main band performs around 4 in the morning.
The party, which began at 11:30 p.m., was opened by a DJ set from "Jurassic Sound" and "You and Me", who played great hits from early reggae to dancehall, warming up the audience for the night’s surprise. During the DJs’ presentation the stage curtains remained closed the whole time, since one of the big surprises was the stage set that had been assembled, also something rarely seen so beautiful for use by a Reggae band in the country.
Even with all the damage Dezarie brought to Expresso Brasil and to Reggae in São Paulo by not performing weeks earlier, the fans came in large numbers and, when Mato Seco took the stage, they were greatly applauded. The repertoire of almost 3 hours of show included songs from their first CD "Mato Seco" such as "Brilho Oculto", "Resistência", "Salvação", "Visão Moderna", "Navegantes da Ilusão", and some new ones already on everyone’s lips, such as "Seco mas não morto", "Tem que viver", "Raiz Forte", "Jah sabe Jah vê", and also the beautiful version of "Construção/Deus Lhe Pague" by the poet Chico Buarque.
The only regrettable fact of the party, and one that certainly deserves to be mentioned so it will not be repeated, was a fight between security guards and a fan who invaded the stage, which forced the band to stop the show and give a true moral lesson to the aggressors, who still have not realized that the mood of a Reggae show is not war, but peace. We from the Surforeggae Team can only congratulate everyone from Banda Mato Seco for taking this great step in their career, and for the grandeur of the event, which undoubtedly did much good, adding even more fuel to the fire of the Reggae scene in São Paulo.
