Farewell to Steely Johnson, one of the main contributors to the creation of dancehall worldwide!

Anyone who likes Dancehall or the more traditional artists of Jamaican music who ventured into the rhythm has certainly heard of the duo Steely and Clevie. Steely was a true innovator and responsible for the growth of Jamaican Dancehall from its origins. With more than 30 years of career, the artist began as keyboardist of the Jamaican backing-band Roots Radics, at the time supporting names such as Gregory Isaacs and Bunny Wailer. After leaving Roots Radics, Steely, who was also the DJ of his Silver Hawk Sound System, decided to invest in a career as producer and creator of riddims. During that time he met Cleveland "Clevie" Browne, with whom he made a musical marriage since the mid-70s. Among the artists with whom the dancehall genius worked we can cite No Doubt, Back Street Boys, Buju Banton, Capleton, Maxi Priest, Jimmy Cliff, Gregory Isaacs, Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Freddie McGregor, Dennis Brown, Sean Paul and Barrington Levy. Steely passed away in Nova York on September 1st, a victim of pneumonia, shortly after suffering several kidney complications. However, his brilliant work and contribution to international music will certainly be remembered.
