This Saturday, March 13 at TAPAS CLUB SP (R. Augusta) the 3rd edition of the ROOTS & FUTURE project takes place, the new night of the Digitaldubs and Dubatak collectives, bringing the best of Jamaican music and its most innovative branches to the country, featuring the new generation on the microphones, DADA YUTE | JR. DREAD | MICHAEL IRIE.
Roots, Dancehall, Dub and Dubstep - the heavy sound of the project will move from the oldest recordings played by traditional Jamaican sound systems to the most current productions heating up the underground scene around the world.
After the performances by Ranking Joe, one of Jamaica's pioneering MCs, in the 1st edition and by Deeder Zaman, founder MC of Asian Dub Foundation, in this 3rd edition the project brings to Brazil for the first time the selection of Mungos Hi-Fi, the most sought-after sound system in Europe today
Mungos Hifi (www.myspace.com/mungoshifi)
Direct from Scotland, the group has been landing hits since 2001, when the song "Ing" broke in the United Kingdom, entering the selections of Jah Shaka and John Peel. The title of "veteran" sound system (despite only 10 years on the road) was earned after more than 1000 shows by the group. Not by chance, its record "Sound System Champions" was a success with the public and critics, by bringing a new and creative language to the traditional bases of dub and dancehall, reaching new audiences outside the reggae circuit.
In their sets, the sound flows through several styles, from ska, passing through roots, dancehall and dubstep. But the main ingredient is the dubplates (exclusive songs) that can only be heard at their dances. In the last year, the sound system played in Mexico, Israel, France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Croatia, Holland, Poland, Austria, as well as in festivals across the United Kingdom.
Now, at the invitation of Dubatak and Digitaldubs (with whom they played in Edinburgh in 2009), Mungo's performs in São Paulo and Rio.
Digitaldubs (www.digitaldubs.com.br)
Formed in 2001, the Digitaldubs is the first sound crew specialized in reggae and dub in Rio de Janeiro, opening a new chapter in Brazil's sound system culture. The collective founded by Marcus "MPC" and Nelson Meirelles is reinforced by several singers and DJs, forming a large family.
With its own studio and label, they released albums and singles with participations by artists such as Ranking Joe, Earl Sixteen and Daddy Freddy, from Jamaica, Tippa Irie, Brinsley Forde (Aswad) and Sylvia Tella, from England, B Negão, Mr. Catra and Ras Bernardo, from Brazil, among many others.
Some of these productions had international releases in compilations such as "Wordsound Made in Brasil", "Roots of Dub Funk 5", "Rough Guide to Brazilian Street Party" and, especially, in several vinyl singles. More recently the renowned English label Soul Jazz put out the DVD of the documentary Dub Echoes, whose original soundtrack was composed by the group.
Live, besides the traditional parties in Rio, the group held historic nights throughout Brazil, sharing the stage with major international artists such as Zion Train, Mad Professor and Lee Perry, and appeared in the line-up of the country's main festivals such as the Tim Festival, Humaitá pra Peixe, Abril Pro Rock, XXXperience, Universo Paralello and the New Year's Eve at Praia de Ipanema. All this work has resonated worldwide and because of that they have already toured Europe and Latin America.
Dubatak (www.dubatak.com)
The DUBATAK label/sound system is a collective idealized by producers Mateus Pinguim, from Rio de Janeiro, and Jeff Boto, from São Paulo. Founded in 2006 and led by the duo, the label released in 2008 its first work, the album É Só Querer, produced and performed by Mateus, who is also an MC, and seasoned with Boto's effects.
At the beginning of 2009, it released the virtual EP CANNABIS RIDDIM with the presence of strong names in the national ragga/dancehall scene, such as Funk Buia, Sista Wolff, Sandro Black and Jimmy Luv. Now Dubatak has just released its first vinyl-pressed Single, produced in an unprecedented musical partnership between Brazil and China, with mixing by the Chinese producer Jiang Liang (www.myspace.com/reggaechina).
In 2010 the collective goes on the attack monthly to present its countless productions, many of them still unreleased.
