One of the most acclaimed artists in South America, arrived for the first time at Brasil last week, from the 26th to the 31st of July. Three Brazilian cities were able to see Dread Mar I up close, which has been selling out tickets in all the South American countries it visits.
The band, who came straight from Argentina, landed in Guarulhos on a connection to Belém/PA, the city of the first performance. Despite the flight lasting almost 4 hours, everyone was very well received at the famous Parque dos Igarapés, the venue for the accommodation and also for the show later in the evening. Expectations for the show, which were already high, were exceeded - an audience of almost two thousand people showed up to enjoy the event on Wednesday.

Brasil was the first country that Dread Mar I performed in where their native language - Spanish - was not spoken. Even so, in Belém people seemed to know the lyrics well. It was no different at São Luis (Maranhão) where Argentine reggae also showed its strength, being very well received by the locals who, in addition to singing the songs, never tired of asking for photos and autographs during and after the show at Circo da Cidade.
In São Paulo, Babylon spoke louder and Kazebre was closed on the day of the event, whose advance sales were already approaching 4,000 tickets. The mix of Dread Mar I with Mato Seco, Leões de Israel and Ventania, attractions that naturally bring a lot of people to shows in the city, was very successful, but that's for next time.
The biggest surprise came in Maceió, a city that has little tradition when it comes to international reggae shows. Despite the heavy rain that almost led to the show being cancelled, the event took place with a huge crowd. The receptivity of the people of Alagoas to the songs in Spanish was surprising and it was really unusual to see such an expressive audience singing several songs by the artist who was performing there for the first time.
Soon the artist should be back in Tupiniquin lands again. Have the doors of Brasil finally been opened to Reggae in Spanish? We hope so, as other big bands like Los Cafres, Cultura Profética, Gondwana and Nonpalidece are hugely successful throughout South America and precisely in their biggest market - Brasil, they don't tour.
