Jamaica, Jamaica! SESC hosts an incredible exhibition on reggae history!
A partnership between SESC and the French journalist and researcher Sébastien Carayol made a dream possible for many reggae lovers in Brazil. The exhibition "Jamaica, Jamaica!" on display at SESC 24 de maio brings a chronological and historical panorama of Jamaican music, tracing a political, social and cultural perspective. In addition to "imported" relics, there are unique materials about the expansion of reggae in Brazil, including in Maranhão, Bahia and São Paulo. Held in the city of Paris in 2017, the exhibition contains historical objects such as the original Studio One desk, sound boxes from old Sound Systems, instruments from the Skatalites, the mythical M-16 guitar of Peter Tosh, among others. The Brazilian collection had contributions from Ricardo Magrão, Stranjah (Fresh Crew), Lys Ventura(Feminine HI FI), Rodrigo Brandão and Camila Miranda. The visiting experience goes beyond text and unpublished images such as those from Cachoeira in Bahia, Gilberto Gil with Jimmy Cliff, relevant record covers, the famous drums of Olodum and Muzenza, as well as the SP section that has a very large series of images never exhibited before, including flyers and posters. The visitor can also go further and operate a live sound system (Lego Violence SS) and other equipment that was developed especially for the expo. It will be on display for 5 months (from March 15 to August 26) and there is still a lot to happen. Talks, round tables, presence of Jamaican artists, workshops and shows.
