ESSENTIAL! Illustrated book presents an unprecedented survey of Brazilian sound systems!
The history of Brazilian sound systems inspired by Jamaican culture began to be traced in the 1970s, in Maranhão, with the traditional radiolas - immense walls of speakers. In the early 2000s, the trajectory of national sound systems began - known that way from then on - with the pioneering speaker boxes of Dubversão Sistema de Som in the city of São Paulo.

MAPA SOUNDSYSTEM BRASIL

After almost two decades since the beginning of this cultural and musical movement, which expanded to all corners of the country, the first survey related to this vast culture was carried out and has now been transformed into printed material. The catalog “Mapa Sound System Brasil”, created by researchers and selectors (as DJs are called in Jamaican culture) Daniella Pimenta and Natan Nascimento, will be launched on June 29 in São Paulo and covers more than 120 Brazilian sound systems inspired by Jamaica. The number of systems in the country is even larger than the total surveyed - and it keeps growing week after week.

THE BOOK

The book is the physical realization of the online Mapa Sound System Brasil, a project started in 2015 on Daniella’s blog Groovin Mood. When the Map was started, the idea was to visualize the activities of reggae sound systems across the country. Besides the big names and pioneers, I was curious to discover who the new names were and how they were working” - she says. In 2018, Daniella, an advertising professional, and Natan, a designer, joined forces to create the printed publication. The project was approved by the Call for Support for Artistic Creation - Reggae Language, from the Municipal Culture Department of São Paulo.
The catalog includes statements from local and international artists, such as Jamaican Walshy Fire, from the duo Major Lazer, and Caribbean producer based in Europe Mad Professor. The catalog does not claim to be a definitive guide to the national sound system. The idea is not to close a list, especially because there are more sounds beyond those that appear in the catalog. Our goal is to bring the reader - Brazilian and from abroad - a broader visual panorama of the movement of this culture in Jamaican molds in Brazil. We want to present a sample - as accurate as possible - of what has been happening here” - Daniella concludes.
