Mourning! Lee 'Scratch' Perry, one of the most powerful names in world reggae, has died!
Eccentric artist and producer Lee Perry passed away this Sunday morning at the Noel Holmes Hospital in Lucea, Jamaica. He was 85 years old. Perry was born in Kendal, Hanover. He made his name on the reggae scene in the 60s, and in the 70s he was already absolutely relevant, having worked with the biggest artists of the time, such as Bob Marley, Max Romeo, Heptones, Gregory Isaacs, and many others.
(The still young Lee Perry)
Owner of a strong personality, he always set out for his own path, having fallen out with Coxsone Dodd, then leaving to work with the wealthy Joe Gibbs. Shortly afterwards, even in charge of the Gibbs label, he went after his own label and created Upsetter. Perry's mind was now 100% free to create. Perry went on to recruit young talent to form his studio band, what would become the Upsetters. The lineup was bombastic: brothers Family Man and Carlton Barret on bass/drums, guitarist Alva Lewis, keyboardist Glen Adams and Max Romeo on vocals. We all know the rest of the story.
(A brilliant 'crazy')
No details about his death were revealed. Here is all our respect and admiration for one of the greatest artists/producers this planet has ever seen.
