In perfect 10-foot solid waves, Renan Rocha brushed past world champion CJ Hobgood, Peterson Rosa sent American legend Kelly Slater into the repechage, Paulo Moura also won his heat against Australians Dean Morrison and Joel Parkinson, and the three Brazilians advanced brilliantly to the third round of the Billabong Pro WCT. Peterson Rosa, currently Top 7 on the WCT, also posted the day's best heat total, with 17.60 points out of a possible 20 (9.25; 3.25; 7.75 and 8.35, with the two best scores counting). The second-best total went to Hawaiian Shane Dorian: 17.25 (7.50; 9.00; 6.25 and 8.25). That was the positive balance for Brazil in the first round of the Billabong Pro, the third stop on the 2002 WCT held on the feared waves of Teahupoo, Tahiti. On the other side, Fábio Gouveia, Rodrigo Dornelles, Vitor Ribas, Guilherme Herdy and Marcelo Nunes went into the repechage. Nine heats were run on Tuesday and the remaining seven first-round heats take place this Wednesday from 3 p.m. (Brasília time).
