In 1998, Aldo Luyde and Junior Dunham, at the time living in Germany, conceived a project that would develop Bahia's musical scene, an engaged work in the social struggle of the Brazilian people for better living conditions and committed to music, without market concessions.
Back in Bahia, Aldo and Junior reunited with old partners and founded not just a band, but a community of musicians, a musical neo-quilombo, with roots solidified in Brazilian black culture. The band born approximately four years ago, with Reggae influence, gained even more personality with the entry of Luciano Vasconcelos (one of the members of the band Lampirônicos) as producer and musical director. The band followed new sovereign paths, innovating and in an ocean of good cultural influences, Navio Negreiro is navigating a new musical genre, which can be labeled afro-rock-brazilian anti-apartheid, a Reggae with strong counterpoints and heavy guitars.
The mix of Reggae, Rock and Afro-Brazilian music shows Resistance in lyrics filled with Musicality, poetry and awareness. The band created its own melodic language, in surprising variations. On their first album entitled "Na viagem d'o último pelotão de escravos", the band Navio Negreiro brings hope and revolt; utopias and social commitments.
The album is almost entirely made of original songs, such as "Dias Ruins" and "Maré Cheia". The only exception is the immortal song "Jorge da Capadócia", transformed into a kind of "closing-body prayer" that had the approval of the author himself, Jorge Bem Jor.
The band Navio Negreiro comes from a successful season at Teatro do Isba and its show is one of the contenders for the 2003 Caymmi Trophy. From this success came, at the end of last year, invitations from the MPB Petrobrás project, to open Jorge Bem Jor's show at the Concha Acústica of Teatro Castro Alves on November 23, to headline the opening party of Moto Festival Salvador on November 27 at the Aeroclube Plaza Show parking lot, and for the main opening show of the national biology students meeting at Universidade Federal da Bahia.
In 2004, the band Navio Negreiro already opened Lobão's show on January 22 at Universidade Católica, at the first Brazilian University Forum on drug discussion, and the "Música no Parque" show at Parque da Cidade on February 15.
All this earned them invitations for tours in Europe, already for the next festival season. In May this year they won the Alarga Tua Vida contest by Alcatel in Portugal, performing a show in Lisbon on May 19 at the award ceremony.
The Alcatel show was a great success, the prize was received from the hands of the Brazilian Ambassador. This great band is conquering the international phonographic market and opening big doors for Afro-Brazilian Culture, it's worth checking out the work.
