Ilha Comprida hosted the 1st Caiaker Waveski Initiation tournament!

Caiaker, a traditional kayak manufacturer, held in the beautiful Municipality of Ilha Comprida - SP coast, the 1st Caiaker Beginner Waveski Tournament, as a big launch party for its newest model: Wave – A mix of kayak with surfboard. This model was developed for kayak surfing with the maneuverability and performance of a surfboard. The event took place on November 6 and 7 and was part of the celebrations for Ilha Comprida city's anniversary. Caiaker in partnership with the city hall provided all participants with: lodging, transportation and food, turning the event into a great opportunity to promote this sport that is still little known in Brazil, but is gaining new followers every day. All participants used identical equipment provided by Caiaker, creating equal conditions. Besides the Tournament held on Sunday, on Saturday Caiaker held, in partnership with ClinicaSurf, a waveski surfing technique clinic for all participants, especially beginners. The company's objective of holding a tournament focused on beginners was very well received, and overall exceeded expectations, as some participants who had never held a paddle managed, after Saturday's clinic, to compete on Sunday and even qualify in their heat advancing, in some cases, to the final. The tournament had three categories: 1 women's, and two men's: Advanced and Beginners. The Advanced category featured various athletes from the Brazilian Canoeing Confederation, including some from the Brazilian kayak polo team, and also the presence of Brazilian waveski champion Gilberto Filgueira, who was the big champion, though with a score only slightly above the other finalists, who made things quite difficult for the favorite. Athletes were divided into heats of 4 competitors and had 15 minutes to surf, being evaluated by Caiaker judges, who classified the 2 best athletes for the following heats. Criteria evaluated were: wave selection, maneuvers, style, radicality and time on the wave.
