Sound Systems and DJs from Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Brasília will come together to celebrate a different Carnival. Instead of traditional samba and marchinhas: reggae, dub and ragga. Instead of floor toms, peals, rattles and agogôs: pick-ups, vinyl records, effects and sub-bass frequencies. The idea of setting up a Sound System during the Rio carnival is not as crazy as it seems. Just like the street blocks, Sound Systems in Jamaica offer people music, fun and culture. On the street, for free. The proposal for the meeting - an unprecedented event in this new reggae scene emerging in Brazil and which completely differs from the common sense conception of Jamaican music - is to become annual. If today's world is globalized, why can only the Notthing Hill Carnival in London be celebrated with Caribbean music?
But let's make one thing very clear: Sound System Attack Carnaval 2006 is just a different proposal. No one needs to take the idea so seriously as to think they are trying to mess with Rio's carnival and demoralize the country's culture. It's nothing like that, on the contrary. Carnivals are different but not exclusive. And long live democracy!
Sound systems are large sound equipment that liven up parties promoted by their owners. In the 1950s, most inhabitants of the capital Kingston did not have devices to listen to records and the releases were all aimed at the ruling class. The radio stations maintained the established elitism and only played songs considered appropriate in their programming. It was a total prejudice on the part of the wealthier classes in relation to popular culture (any similarity with the beginnings of samba in Brazil is not a mere coincidence).
It was an attempt to fight against the dictatorship of the international recording industry. The formula: marginal music, speakers and amplifiers on a small truck. The small "electric trios" stopped in front of squares, courts, universities, bars and played songs by those who didn't have space on record labels. The alternative artists were grateful and so was the public. A democratic system of musical dissemination was thus formed. No wonder Sound Systems in Jamaica was known as the people's radio. The result of this dispute could not be better. Jamaican music today is the best known among all others coming from less favored countries.
