Check out Surforeggae's interview with Nell, one of the best female voices in Brazilian reggae!
Now check out the interview of Rafael Surforeggae with Nell. Saiba its ideologies, projects and what happened in this artist's career from the times of Mr. Colin e Antibabylon, to the great participations these days.

THE INTERVIEW

Rafael: I always like to ask about how it all began, after all many people still do not know the work of an artist, however famous he is. How was your start in music? Where did the interest come from and what were the reasons why she followed this career? Nell: I was always a sketch artist and a plastic artist, I started making T-shirts and flyers for a band "Espelho Noturno", the singer of this band died, and I ended up staying in the place by chance, I had a show scheduled and I knew all the songs, the guys wanted a man in the vocal, but I ended up two years and today I'm the only one still in the song. Rafael: What artists and bands have you ever worked with? Nell: In chronological order: Mr. Colin, Antibabylon, Jai mahal, Dagô Miranda, Edson gomes, Primitive, Harold Caribbean, David Hubard, Nengo Vieira, were participations in shows with Tchagas, Walking Lions, Andrew Tosh, Erick Donaldson, Honey Boy, among others. Rafael: Why the interest in working with artists from Reggae ? Nell:There was a moment in my solo career, I had a band called "Neoandertal", it was very difficult to close show, I was a little stressed and I decided to accept the invitation of Mr Colin to do back vocals, it was only then that I met Bob Marley e I fell in love, from then on every show that I did came a guy from some band and called me to sing or record, from then on I went with reggae. And detail that certainly my interest wasn't for the money, because it's pretty hard to win some by doing Reggae. Rafael: You think about investing in a solo career again? As a singer in a band of Reggae? Nell: Yes, I think about it almost daily, when I started recording this solo CD I hadn't yet met Reggae, I remember that Arthur Maia had just recorded DVD with Gilberto Gil, the one that was recorded in Jamaica, so I asked him if he could play reggae, (mico) we decided last minute to do a reggae, the problem is that reggae is not just a musical style. It's a philosophy of life! I'm not gonna do like a lot of reggae artists anyway, you have to transmit a message, and I'm not a good composer, I'm thinking about recording a reggae single CD but with compositions from those who understand philosophy. A little while ago I spoke with the Gerson da Conceição, he called me praising my CD e eu told him that he would be the producer of my next album and he liked the idea. Rafael: Have you ever been discriminated against for singing and living the Reggae? Nell: Yes, I have many friends musicians, rockers, punks, etc... when I invite them to watch a reggae show some twist their noses, but most of them do. Rafael: How do you characterize the national scenario for the rise of an independent musician? Do you think there are stimuli? Nell: Everything is about work, initiative and a minimum of capital, record company is not everything and sometimes instead of helping gets in the way, I have at least four cases of close friends who took off big record companies and nothing happened. Weighing the pros and cons, recording dependent CD in is a lot less work, you visualize better where, as your CD eis being conveyed, and how much sold, etc. It is logical that the lack of media interferes, but the Tribo de Jah has never needed much media and has been standing there firm and strong for example. Rafael: What are the main sources you inspired yourself to create your own style? Nell: Well, I grew up in Pirituba, periphery of Sampa, you see, my first influence was "Black music", samba, rock, that stuff, it's in the blood! Then I started listening to rock with a boyfriend, met Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin e I saw that in rock also had blackness. Then came the Reggae, then you saw it. My style and a fusion of these styles, black, rock and reggae. Rafael: Antes de follow the musical career, what were their occupations? Nell: I had few jobs in the field of arts (designist, art-finalist, illustrator) the last one was in a bank where I worked for six years, then started making money with music. I graduated (Letras Inglês e Portugues). If I have to, I'll be a teacher. Rafael: Can your music activities support you? Or is it still very difficult to achieve something in this area, especially by talking about the Reggae that is a discriminated rhythm? Nell: No, not by far, if I were to live on music I'd starve... with the reggae then... discrimination comes from showhouse owners, they think every repo is poor and pottery. Por exemple, there was supposed to have been a mega reggae event by the city hall at the beginning of the year, I would sing with two bands, in the end the city did not authorize and without physical space option the event was cancelled. Rafael: Thanks for the interview and we hope to hear soon about your new CD. Muito success in your career and continue spreading the message of Reggae. Caso want to leave a message for visitors, the space is all yours. Nell: Thank you! Depois de so many years singing reggae knew I could count on this site that I like so much. I learned a lot from reading the articles, didn't leave each one without consulting the agenda. Thank you so much Rafa e Surforeggae! To surforggae visitors I can only say that "If music silenced the world, the world would stop smiling..."
